Jeffrey I. Cummings
Mr. Cummings began his legal career in 1987 as a law clerk for the Honorable Ann Claire Williams. During his clerkship, Mr. Cummings assisted Judge Williams with the entire range of her civil and criminal cases. In 1989, Mr. Cummings became an associate with Miner, Barnhill & Galland. He became a shareholder at the firm in 1995 and has served as the firm's co-managing partner. Over his 23 years in private practice, Mr. Cummings has represented a variety of clients -- both plaintiffs and defendants -- in a broad range of civil cases. Mr. Cummings has tried cases before juries, judges, arbitrators and hearing officers, and he has argued fourteen cases before the federal and state appellate courts. Mr. Cummings has also served as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the City of Chicago's Commission on Human Relations where he has presided over approximately fifteen trials concerning claims of discrimination and retaliation and issued written findings of fact and conclusions of law.

Mr. Cummings has represented individuals and classes of individuals in employment discrimination cases. His clients have been involved in different industries ranging from law enforcement to grocery store workers to packing house workers to executives. His clients' statutory and constitutional claims have involved various types of discrimination (including race, sex, and age), unlawful retaliation, and wage and hour disputes. He has also represented the firm's not-for-profit and corporate clients in defense of employment discrimination actions.
Mr. Cummings has represented the firm's clients in voting rights litigation under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and in cases involving excessive force, housing discrimination, and First Amendment claims. Mr. Cummings has been selected by Leading Lawyers as a top lawyer in Civil Rights and Constitutional Law.
Mr. Cummings has worked with George Galland in the representation of Chicago area hospitals. In addition to participating in the defense of medical malpractice defense case, Mr. Cummings has represented the hospitals in connection with psychiatric malpractice, defamation, employment discrimination, and other tort cases.
Mr. Cummings has represented the firm's corporate clients in litigation concerning breach of contract, fraud, commercial tort, and personal injury cases.
Representation of nonprofit corporations
Mr. Cummings has represented the firm's not-for-profit clients before administrative agencies, in labor arbitrations, and in court in connection with a variety of claims concerning employment discrimination, collective bargaining disputes, and unemployment compensation. Mr. Cummings has reviewed and drafted employment policies and employment handbooks for these clients and he has also presented anti-harassment training to the clients' employees.
Representation of relators in False Claims Act cases
Mr. Cummings has represented a number of "relators" under the False Claims Act who allege that corporate defendants have defrauded the federal and state governments through the submission of false claims. These cases have concerned fraud in the healthcare industry, federal contracting concerning Minority Business Enterprises, and the defense industry.
